Company culture is critical for every employee – and that includes temporary employees! Company culture is crucial to the bonding of smooth-functioning teams and ensuring fit among employees (so they can be a team in the first place!).
The more all employees work well together and enjoy each other’s company, the more productive and engaged employees they will be.
But ensuring that temps and the company culture mesh well can be a challenge. How can you get your temps involved and feeling like they are part of the team? Here are some tips.
Make them feel a part of the team from the beginning.
In part, getting temps to feel like part of the team involves treating them like team members from the very beginning. Don’t leave social onboarding of temps to chance.
Show them around in a friendly way on the first day. Show them where coffee, tea, and water are found. Introduce them to people. Put together a list of names and contact information.
If your groups work on Slack or other team messaging apps, include the temps as part of it.
Invite them to work functions.
Then, be sure to include them during daily office life as well. If you have regular staff meetings, for example, be sure to include the temps working with the staff! You’d be surprised to learn how many people don’t think to add them.
If you have off-site meetings or conferences, think about inviting the temps as well. If they work with or need the information that’s going to be occurring, it’s a good idea – and promotes identification with the company culture as well.
Include them in team events.
If you want temps to feel like part of the team, make sure they are included in all team-building activities.
Does your team have apparel, for example, such as company t-shirts, hats, hoodies, or jackets? Give the temps one! If you have company mugs or travel gear, share with the temps.
Do you have periodic team-building activities off-site, such as Trivia Tuesday or Friday happy hour? Ask the temps to come along.
